Tillamook (IPA: [ˈtɪ lə mək]) is the county seat of Tillamook County, Oregon. The city is located along the southeast end of Tillamook Bay on the Pacific Ocean. It is named for the Native American Tillamook people, a Coast Salish tribe who lived in this area in the early nineteenth century. The population was 4,352 at the 2000 census. While Tillamook derives some income from tourists passing through on their way to the ocean beaches, its economy is firmly based on agriculture. The rich farmlands around the city are given to milk cattle, which provide the materials for the largest cheese factory (of 25 total located in the county), just north of the downtown on U.S. Route 101.
