In his only season with Atlanta, Ruskell assisted McKay in piecing together a roster that won the NFC South and earned a berth in the NFC Championship Game. This after the Falcons finished last in the conference with a 5-11 record the season before his arrival. "If there are 50 great evaluators of talent in the NFL, I believe Tim is in the top five," said McKay, who also worked with Ruskell in Tampa Bay. "We had great success in the draft while we were in Tampa, due in large part to Tim and the players he would put up on the draft board and believe in." As director of player personnel in Tampa Bay, Ruskell was instrumental in providing the Buccaneers with a roster that sent seven players to the Pro Bowl in 2002. During his tenure in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers had at least one player named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last eight seasons from 1996 through 2003. In 2000, the Buccaneers sent a league-high nine players to the Pro Bowl, including a league-best six starters. Ruskell originally joined the Buccaneers as a regional scout in 1987, a job he performed for four years before being promoted to director of college scouting in 1992. Prior to joining the Buccaneers, Ruskell served as the director of scouting for the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits from 1985-1986. He also worked as a scout for the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1983 through 1985. Ruskell is considered one of the finest scouts of football talent in the industry today.
