Timber Lake is a city located in Dewey County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 443. It is the county seat of Dewey County6.

Timber Lake is located at 45°25'43" North, 101°4'29" West (45.428682, -101.074606)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 1.1 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 443 people, 183 households, and 120 families residing in the city. The population density is 417.2/km˛ (1,086.8/mi˛). There are 207 housing units at an average density of 194.9/km˛ (507.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 60.72% White, 0.00% African American, 36.34% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 183 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,500, and the median income for a family is $28,000. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,047. 23.3% of the population and 20.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 19.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
