Abraham Lincoln is elected the sixteenth President of the United States, and begins to work to keep the country together.
Southern states break away from the United States, angering northerners and causing the Civil War.
The Emancipation Proclamation frees slaves in southern states to punish the south for trying to break away from the country.
Georgia State Flag (1614 words)
In 1879 the General Assembly of Georgia passed an act changing the flag to a vertical band of blue next to the staff occupying one third of the flag; the remainder was divided into three horizontal bands with the upper and lower in red and the middle in white.
The orignal state flag was designed by John Sammons Bell, an Atlanta attorney, and was adopted as the official flag of Georgia in 1956.
History does not record who made the first Georgia state flag, when it was made, what it looked like, or who authorized its creation.
