Museum of Contemporary Photography: Barney, Tina (491 words)
Tina Barney is best known for her ongoing documentation of the lifestyles and relationships of her family and close friends, many of whom belong to the social elite of New York and New England.
Barney’s style is part candid, part tableau; her subject matter raises in equal measure issues of privilege and the interaction of family members.
Barney was born in 1945 to a wealthy family in New York.
Private Rooms (1109 words)
Tina Barney has made a career of photographing the people she knows best in the tradition-bound settings of the American elite.
Barney’s use of a view camera with a tripod and, often, lights, eliminates the element of surprise, but her familiarity with her subjects and decades-long status as an observer encourage candid behavior.
Barney has recorded a generation of poignant human gestures from childhood to adolescence to adulthood — a dance in which parents advance from confident, blooming fecundity to proud but blighted age.
