Plot summary

Richard Ward and Julia Struges, a divorcing couple are traveling in First Class on the R.M.S. Titanic. Determined to remove her family from Richards' "high society" world, Julia secretly takes their two children: seventeen-year-old Annette and ten-year-old Norman on the Titanic and plans to raise them in her hometown of Mecannack, Michigan. However, after he learns of her plans, Richard buys a steerage ticket aboard the vessel in hopes of reconciling with his family.


Also aboard is a twenty-year-old cricket player Gifford Rogers, who falls for Annette, and suspended priest George S. Headley who has become an alcoholic. The film was a hit and it touched and terrified moviegoers around the world. It also spawned new interest in the Titanic sinking and inspired Walter Lord to write his great novel A Night to Remember. Titanic (1997) at Reel Classics: a review (1723 words)
In the 1953 film (in which you'll notice a few similarities, but of which, the 1997 film is not a remake), the focus of the movie is the breakup of Stanwyck and Webb's marriage; the Titanic is only the setting.
The 1953 movie could easily have been transplanted to any other time and place with a tragic end, and its essence would have remained the same because in the 1953 film, the plot and characters are the focus.
In this movie, the setting of the story overwhelms the story itself-- so much so that at one point after the ship had begun to sink, Kate and Leo appeared on the screen and I realized I had forgotten they were still on the boat; so much else was going on.

Titanic was to be one of the last movies Fox filmed in the academy ratio of 1.37:1.
Titanic was directed by Jean Negulesco and produced by Charles Brackett, who was disappointed by the box office results of"Titanic": "Maybe people had a certain reluctance to seeing a film in which, they knew, almost every one in the cast would be drowned".
Even though Titanic "purists" looked down on the 1953 "Titanic", for it's sloppy attention to detail, the film remains very popular, and certain aspects of the film were resurrected in 1997 for James Cameron's "Titanic".
