Encyclopedia > Tiveden National Park

Tiveden is a Swedish forest famous for its scenery and notorious throughout history for its wilderness and dangers. It was a notorious hiding place for outlaws. Tiveden National Park is a comparatively small part of the forest (13.5 km²), situated within the municipalities of Karlsborg and Laxå. It was established in 1983.

The name is very old and disputed. -Ved is cognate to English Wood and the first part of its name, Ti-, either means "god" or refers to the god Tyr. Tiveden separates Nericia from Westrogothia, and was formerly a frontier between the Geats and the Swedes.
