Tlalnepantla de Baz is a city and municipality located in the State of México. It is an important industrial suburb of the Mexico City metropolitan area. It lies in two sections near the northern tip of the Federal District (Distrito Federal) of Mexico. The city had an official 2005 census population of 674,417 (the fourth-largest city in the state), while the municipality had a population of 683,808. About the Name

Tlalnepantla comes from the nahuatl words tlalli (land) and nepantla (middle), The Middle Land.


Baz comes from the last name of Gustavo Baz Prada, important politician and soldier of Emiliano Zapata's army during the Mexican Revolution. After of the Revolution, Baz Prada was Governor of the Estado de México (State of Mexico) and rector of Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM).


Religion

In pre-hispanic and colonial times, this city was an important religious center. At the end of the XI century, the old settlers in the Valley of Anahuac, came to the north side searching better weather and lands in the actual Tlalnepantla's region.


The chichimeca's leader named Xolotl, founded the Tenayuca's Empire, made the first census in the Americas and between 1064 and 1116 a.C. built the Pyramids of Tenayuca. The Spanish Franciscans came to Tlalnepantla to convert the Otomies and Mexicas (the original settlers) into Catholics, and built the Cathedral of Corpus Christi in 1550.


Economy

In the Independence times, Tlalnepantla was one of the most important district of Mexico City. When Porfirio Díaz Mori was president of Mexico, Tlalnepantla started the industrial development, and in the 1950's started the demographic explosion.
