Toa Payoh is a regional unit in Singapore. It currently hosts the currently the Toa Payoh new town, probably one of the oldest new towns in Singapore with its history dating back to 1962. It is home to the HDB-hub and hosts one of the two air-conditioned bus interchanges in Singapore, the other being in Sengkang.


Toa Payoh boasts excellent sporting facilities, including a stadium, an indoor sports hall and the country's best swimming complex, where the SEA Games swimming competition is held at. These are also the venues for several of the National Schools sports competitions. There is a plethora of shophouses in Toa Payoh Central that participate in the annual Great Singapore Sale. In the outskirts of Toa Payoh, you can find the Singapore Press Holdings main office.


One would recall that Toa payoh New Town actually started off as a self-contained town in 1964, where facilities such as shopping centres, schools, clinics, community centre and bus terminals were located. Moreover, industrial estates were located within the vicinity to provide jobs for the residents. It was built away from the bustling city areas to ease congestion in transport lines.


"Toa Payoh" literally means "Big Swamp" in Minnan, for it was indeed swampland before it was transformed into a housing estate Mǐn Nán (Chinese: 閩南語), also spelt as Minnan or Min-nan; native name Bân-lâm-gú; literally means Southern Min or Southern Fujian and refers to the local language/dialect of southern Fujian province, China. ...
