As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 23,855 and the density of 116.41 persons per km². The total area is 204.92 km².


The city was founded on June 1, 1954.

As of 2003, the city had an estimated population of 23,855 and the density of 116.41 persons per km².
On January 1, 2006, the city of Tochio merged into the city of Nagaoka and was thereby dissolved.
