The Toiyabe Range as seen from the north shoulder of Arc Dome
The Toiyabe Range is a mountain range in central Nevada in the United States. It starts in northwestern Nye County and runs approximately 120 miles NNE through eastern Lander County. The highest point is Arc Dome at 11788 feet, which is near the southern end of the range. The range generally decreases in elevation to the north.
The Toiyabe Range is separated from the Shoshone Mountains to the west by the Reese River Valley, although they intermingle at their southern extremes. It is separated from the Toquima Range to the east by the Big Smokey Valley.
The small city of Austin, Nevada is located on the western slope of the Toiyabe Range, about midway along the range. U.S. Highway 50 runs through Austin and then crosses the range with a summit elevation of 7,484 feet.
It arises in the southern ToiyabeRange, on the flanks of Arc Dome.
It then flows north between the ToiyabeRange and the Shoshone Range for approximately half its length, then passes through a low point in the Shoshone Range and continues north between that range and the Fish Creek Mountains.
Once it exits the ToiyabeRange it becomes a slow, muddy stream and in most years dwindles into a chain of shallow pools long before it reaches the Humboldt River.
