The city is close to Tokyo.


As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 335,959 and the density of 4,666.75 persons per km². The total area is 71.99 km².


The city was founded on November 3, 1950.

Saitama has been a regional transportation hub for both passengers and cargo.
The name "Saitama" originally comes from the Sakitama (埼玉郡) district of what is now the city of Gyoda in the northern part of what is now known as Saitama Prefecture.
The prefectural name "Saitama" (埼玉県) was changed from kanji into hiragana, thus Saitama City (ã•ã„ãŸã¾å¸‚) was born.

Tokorozawa borders the Tokyo communities of Kiyose City, Higashi-Murayama City, Higashi-Yamato City, Musashi-Murayama City, and Mizuhomachi; and the Saitama communities of Iruma City, Sayama City, Kawagoe City, Miyoshimachi, and Niiza City.
Tokorozawa was established as as city on November 3, 1950.
The Tokorozawa Matsuri is a festival held each year in October and features parade floats (mikoshi), taiko drums, and samba dancers.
