The Tokyo Kyuko Electric Railway (東京急行電鉄 Tōkyō Kyūkō Dentetsu), better known as Tokyu(東急), is a major private railway operator in the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan. Its headquarters are in Shibuya, Tokyo.


It was formed on September 2, 1922 as the Meguro-Kamata Electric Railway (目黒蒲田電鉄), and was later known as the Tokyo-Yokohama Electric Railway (東京横浜電鉄) before gaining its current name in 1943. From 1944 to 1948, it also owned the companies now known as the Keihin Kyuko Electric Railway, Keio Electric Railway, and Odakyu Electric Railway. During this time, it was colloquially known as Dai-Tokyu ("Great Tokyu").

Tokyo owns a single tramway line (12.2 km.), which used to be part of the former large tramway network.
Tokyo's metro stations get beautiful names, like Asakusa, at the oldest line of the system, which is called Asakusa as well: 'the low gras'.
