Tomás MacGiolla was born on 25 January1924 in County Tipperary. In his early life MacGiolla was an active republican. He was interned in the 1950's and was one of the people who tried to push Sinn Féin to the left following the failure of the IRA border campaign from 1956 to 1962. In 1969Sinn Féin split and MacGiolla became leader of Official Sinn Féin. In 1977 the party changed its name to Sinn Féin The Workers' Party and in 1982 it became simply The Workers Party. In 1982 MacGiolla was elected to Dáil Éireann under the banner of the new party. In 1988 he retired as party leader, succeeded by Proinsias De Rossa. In 1992 MacGiolla became the sole member of The Workers Party in the Dáil when the Democratic Left was founded. He lost his Dáil seat in the general election later that year. MacGiolla served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1993 to 1994 and remained a Member of Dublin Corporation until 1999.
