He was born in Lansing, Michigan and graduated with an M.D. from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta and decided to stay there afterwards. When 6th District incumbent Johnny Isakson declined to run for reelection in order to run for the U.S. Senate, Price entered the Republican primary for the seat. He was opposed by five other candidates, including fellow state senators Robert LaMutt and Chuck Clay, both of Cobb County. He placed second in the first round of the primary and then faced LaMutt in a runoff and decisively defeated him. Since no Democrat or other candidate filed to run for the seat, the Republican primary also decided the district's next representative.
