Biography
Per Tomas Brolin started playing football at an early age when his father gave him a ball. At the beginning they lived in an apartment before they moved to Näsviken, a small community outside Hudiksvall. He then moved with his family to his grandparents farm in Finnflo. At the farm there were always horses from where Tomas got his interest in horses. It was however football which was his biggest interest. External links Hudiksvall - Official site lanhudik. ...
Football Career He played his first match when he was 6 years old on Forssåtunet and often played in teams with older players. In one match he scored 15 goals and was noticed by "Buster", a popular football comics magazine. His first professional match was for Näsvikens IK in 1984. In 1986 he entered Fotbollsgymnasiet, the soccer academy, in Sundsvall and was signed to GIF Sundsvall. Even though his teachers at home tried to talk him over not to go, Brolin had made his choice. He came to the club at the right time and the club was having a very successful season. At the time in GIF Sundsvall he was trained by Anders Grönhagen and many veterans which had a positive influence on him. Rumour surrounded about the very ambitious talent at the school and in 1987 he made his debut against IF Elfsborg and demonstrated a bicycle kick infront of press-photographers. In 1990 he moved to IFK Norrköping and scored a hattrick in his first match against IFK Göteborg which they defeated with a humiliating 6-0 and the term "Brolinare" was coined. Before World Cup in Italy, coach Olle Nordin was looking for a forward picked Brolin for the match against Wales national football team. Success, he scored 2 goals and was called to the Sweden in 1990. The success continued and he scored against Brazil. The 2-1 goal got him noticed and after the tournament he signed for Italian club Parma F.C. at that time known as A.C. Parma. That year Brolin would win his first Guldbollen as Sweden's footballer of the year. GIF Sundsvall is a Swedish football club located in the city of Sundsvall. ...

At the Peak of his Career Hot after World Cup he was important part of A.C. Parma who won the Coppa Italia in 1991. In Euro 92 held in Sweden, three of Sweden's goals came when he was joint top-scorer with three others (Jan Eriksson and Kennet Andersson). Brolin scored one of the most beautiful goals of the tournament against England, when after a sharp passing move on the edge of the England box, he lifted the ball high over the keeper to give Sweden victory. He scored 3 goals for Sweden in the 1994 World Cup, as Sweden surprised many by finishing third, and where Brolin's own performance earned him a place in the "World Cup All Star Team". In the quarterfinal against Romania he scores one of his most famous goals and still today considered as a groundbreaking freekick. Outside the penalty area everyone expected Stefan Schwarz to shoot, instead he jumped over the ball and Håkan Mild passed beside the wall where Brolin sneaked up behind and scored. Even though it was ground breaking, coach Tommy Svensson had seen another variation in Brolin's club Parma, with less successful result, and took a notice. Before the match he told the players whenever opportunity appears they should go for it. "The Parma Variant" as it was called. Brolin received his second Guldbollen award in 1994.-1...

The Beginning and the End In the autumn of 1994, Brolin's career hit a huge downturn as he suffered a severe ankle injury during a European Championship qualifying game in Stockholm. He never reached his pre-injury level (made the "World Cup Team" in 1994) again, and was in 1995 sold off in a £4.5million transfer to Leeds United. Battling constant weight problems, he made only 19 appearances for Leeds over the next two seasons. Brolin would endure a loan spell at FC Zurich and another one at Parma, before coming back to England and a non-descript half-year stay with Crystal Palace, where he was caretaker player-manager for a short spell, alongside Italian international Attilio Lombardo. His spell as manager at Palace makes him the youngest manager ever to take charge of a Premiership side, as he was still only 28 years old at the time. At the end of the season he retired from football and on 12 augusti he told at a press conference, it's over for me. For Sweden, Brolin made 47 appearances and scored 26 goals. After retiring from football, Tomas Brolin settled to become a businessman and returned to his homeland where he among other things owns an Italian-Swedish restaurant called "Undici" (Italian for "11", the number he wore in Parma). He also invested money in real estate and - to some public amusement - in a firm selling a new type of mouthpiece for vacuum cleaners. Tomas has also played in Swedish non-league football, intriguingly as a goalkeeper for Hudiksvalls A.B.K. where his brother Håkan Brolin played. He has also released a single in Sweden, which includes him lying in a hottub surrounded by stereotypically blonde Swedish ladies called Friends in Need - "Alla Vi" which has been considered, and joked around with, as the definite downfall of a legend. A football goalkeeper leaves the ground to parry a shot on goal In many team sports, a goalkeeper (termed goaltender, netminder, goalie, or keeper in some sports) is a designated player that is charged with directly preventing the opposite team from scoring by defending the goal. ...
Trivia - Tomas Brolin's famous goal celebration, "The pirouette" is still today popular in Sweden among amateurs as well as professionals as a dedication to him. It is unknown from where he got the inspiration but there are many similarities between him and Mary Poppins.
- For his club and for Sweden, he took most of the penalties and used a special technique where he took one extra step before hitting the ball, which meant he held the right foot in shooting position enough long to make the goalkeeper go down he simply rolled it in the other corner.
- He has been a great influence for many of today's professional football players including his Swedish teammate Henrik Larsson.
- He's considered a legend in Parma where people still speak about him since the club had its most successful years to date during his stay and helped to establish the team among the greats.
- On 15 November 2006 the Sweden was playing a friendly match against Côte d'Ivoire. Before the match striker Didier Drogba was interviewed about what he knew about Sweden. The only thing he knew was that "Sweden had a great team during Euro'92 with Tomas Brolin."
- At the Swedish wikipedia if you look up "Näsviken" and "Finnflo", both articles are mentioning that this is where Tomas Brolin grew up.
- Beside his business he is successful poker player.
- He was nominated the award for the "All-time best Swedish football player" in 2005 surpassed by Henrik Larsson.
