Tomie dePaola was born on September 15, 1934 in Meriden, Connecticut. After high school, Tomie dePaola attend art school at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
He graduated from the Pratt Institute in 1956 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts. DePaola worked as an art professor at Newton College of the Sacred Heart for four years, he moved to California where he taught at San Francisco College for Women and received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, as well as a doctorial equivalency from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco, California. From 1972 until 1979, dePaola taught a numerous colleges in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Currently Tomie dePaola resides in New London, New Hampshire with his four dogs. DePaola is the proud owner of four Welsh terriers, Madison, Markus, Morgan, and Moffat, whom appear in his Meet the Barkers series.
TomiedePaola was born in 1934 and by the age four he knew he wanted to be an artist.
Tomie's parents supported his desire to be an artist and to perform on stage.
TomiedePaola's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including a 1976 Caldecott Honor Book Award for his picture book "Strega Nona." The title character, whose name means "Grandma Witch" is apparently very loosely based on Tomie's Italian grandmother.
