Plot

Thomas R. Callahan III (Tommy) (Chris Farley) is a ne'er-do-well prone to wild partying and frequent bouts of stupidity. After seven years, Tommy barely graduates from Marquette University and returns to his hometown, Sandusky, Ohio, where his father, Tom Callahan Sr. (Brian Dennehy), gives him a cushy job at the family auto parts plant. Later, Tommy's father reveals to him that he is engaged to Beverly Barish-Burns (Bo Derek), and that Tommy will have a step-brother, Paul (Rob Lowe). Unfortunately, Tom Sr. suffers from a heart attack on his wedding day and dies, just after marrying Beverly. At a board meeting after the funeral, the bank reneges on Callahan Auto's loans to create a brake pad division. However, Tommy comes up with the idea to give up his inheritance for collateral and go with his father's former assistant, Richard Hayden (David Spade), an acquaintance who's despised Tommy since childhood because of his immaturity, on the road in a last-ditch attempt to save the company. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Paul and Beverly are in a romantic relationship, scheming to get rich by selling Beverly's inherited company shares after the company goes under and is sold to Zalinsky Auto Parts, a major Midwestern auto parts supplier owned by Ray Zalinsky (Dan Aykroyd), whose commercials indicate he's an average joe. On the road, Tommy's hyperactivity, inexperience, and bizarre sales tactics alienate several potential buyers and only fuels tensions between Tommy and Richard. However, after witnessing Tommy convince a surly waitress to serve him after the kitchen is closed, Richard notices Tommy's potential as a salesman (though his tactics with the waitress are similar to those on the road). Nevertheless, after this discussion, Tommy begins making extremely successful sales, and soon they go over the 500,000 mark that was needed in order for Callahan Auto to receive the loan from the bank. This doesn't go over well with Paul and Beverly. While Tommy and Richard are returning to Sandusky, Paul attempts to sabotage the company's order system, resulting in many cancelled orders. The company is doomed to be sold to Zalinsky at a board meeting in Chicago the following day. Tommy decides to go to Chicago in a desperate bid to convince Ray Zalinsky to spare Callahan Auto. With the flights sold out, Tommy and Richard disguise themselves as flight attendants to make it onto the plane. Meanwhile, Michelle discovers Paul and Beverly kissing at the airport, prompting her to contact her brother, a detective. Tommy pleads his case to Zalinsky, who refuses and proves to the two that he's the complete opposite to his television commercial persona, and Tommy and Richard are escorted out of the building by security. Feeling rejected because of their failure to convince Zalinsky and save the company, Tommy is grief-stricken before Richard cheers him up, helping changed their partnership into a genuine friendship. Just as Tommy's weight proceeds to make their bench they're sitting on collapse, a taxi pulls up to them to reveal Michelle, who informs Tommy and Richard that Paul and Beverly are professional con artists. It is also revealed that they are married, making Beverly and Tom Sr.'s marriage invalid. Tommy steals some road flares from a nearby road construction crew, passing them off as dynamite in order to gain access to the board meeting with a television news crew. Tommy manages to publicly shame Zalinsky, who has adopted a working-class "everyman" image in his commercials, into agreeing to purchase 500,000 brake pads in order to help the blue-collar folk that work at Callahan Auto. Zalinsky acquiesces under the mindset that the whole company will be his anyway once Beverly sells her shares to him, and signs the contract with Tommy in front of the television news crew. However, Michelle reveals the truth about Paul and Beverly, that Beverly's marriage to Big Tom was not official, and therefore, all shares revert back to Tommy. Paul narrowly escapes. Tommy returns to the Callahan factory, where he is made president of the company.
