The Tonghak Peasant Revolution in Korea reached its peak in 1894, when the peasant armies became strong enough that the government of Korea requested military assistance from Japan and China. This request ultimately led to the first Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895).

The Donghak Peasant Revolution in Korea was the endpoint of a series of Japanese coups in Korea which brought the Joseon dynasty to an end.
Forty Tonghak leaders petitioned at the King's place in Seoul in April of 1893, were refused entry, told to go home, and left the city of Seoul in a panic.
Tonghak staffers were put in shadow positions in 53 districts in Cholla, minding government officials to prevent extortion and as historians write "to protect the farmers' interests".

Chundoism arose from the Tonghak (東學) revolution that began in 1812 in Chosen.
In 1862, half a century after the peasant rebellion led by Hong Kyong-nae was out down, a group of farmers in Chinju, Kyongsang-do province, rose up against their oppressive provincial officials and the wealthy landowners.
The agrarian revolt in Chinju triggered peasant uprisings elsewhere.
