Thomas Anthony Cunningham (born 16 September1952, Workington) is Member of Parliament for Workington in the United Kingdom, and a member of the Labour Party. He became MP in 2001, having previously been leader of Allerdale District Council, and a member of the European Parliament for Cumbria North, from 1994 to 1999. TonyCunningham was born in Workington and educated at the Workington Grammar School before attending the University of Liverpool where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1975, and the Didsbury College, Manchester where he qualified as a tacher with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in 1976.
TonyCunningham was elected at the 2001 General Election for the safe Labour seat of Workington on the retirement with a peerage Dale Campbell-Savours.
TonyCunningham is very sport minded, he is a qualified rugby union coach and referee, and has played cricket and football, as well as rugby (both league and union) competitively.
Cunningham was reportedly almost court-martialed while still in flight school for breaking into an office to compare his records with those of his colleagues—a charge denied by Cunningham, but supported by two of his superior officers at the time.
Cunningham was a member of the Appropriations and Intelligence committees, and chaired the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Human Intelligence Analysis and Counterintelligence during the 109th Congress.
Cunningham was the lead sponsor of the Shark Finning Prohibition Act, which banned the practice of shark finning in all US waters and pushed America to the lead on efforts to ban shark finning worldwide.
