Toro de la Vega The town is well known in Spain for the "Toro de la Vega" ("Bull of the Meadow" in Spanish ) festival, which happens on the Tuesday of the second week in September. Part of the town's patron saint celebrations, which honour "La Virgen de la Peña", it consists of the chasing, and killing by spearing, of a bull. Unlike in bullfighting , the spear attacks are made by many contestants on horse and foot, and the adjudged dealer of the killing blow is allowed to cut off the animal's testicles, and parade them through the town on the end of their spear. The winner is also rewarded by representatives of the town council with a medal and iron spear. The ceremony is attacked by animal welfare groups for it's cruelty, and defended as an historical relic of the precursor activity to tauromachy.
