The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is a Canadian large vocal ensemble based in Toronto, Canada. The choir was founded in 1894 by Dr. Augustus S. Vogt and was originally an extension of the choir of Jarvis St. Baptist Church in Toronto which Dr. Vogt directed. The choir is named after composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Felix Mendelssohn wrote his first symphony at the young age of fifteen. ...


The choir has 160 voices. They are mostly volunteers with a professional core of 20.


The choir is associated with The Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir (about 30 singers, ages 15 – 23), and the 60-voice Toronto Mendelssohn Singers.


The choir performs throughout Canada and has also toured in the United States and Europe including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Kennedy Center and major venues in Vienna, Salzburg and Prague.


Recordings

The ensemble has many recordings on the EMI/Angel and Naxos labels. The choir has appeared on movie soundtracks including the award-winning 1993 soundtrack to Schindler's List (uncredited) under the direction of John Williams. Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (203 words)
The choir began in 1894 as the Mendelssohn Choir of Toronto, a group of 75 voices founded on Augustus Stephen Vogt's Jarvis St Baptist Church choir.
The new choir, already grown during the first months of rehearsal to 167 voices, gave its first concert 15 Jan 1895 in the new Massey Music Hall (Massey Hall).
Despite the choir's success with critics and the public, Vogt disbanded it in 1897, only to revive it 19 Sep 1900, after three years of canny long-term planning, under a constitution requiring members to re-audition annually.
Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (118 words)
A Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir (a 60- to 70-voice mixed group aged 14 to 19) was founded by the senior organization in 1977.
In 1979 Robert Cooper replaced Fagan, and that same year the choir's Christmas concert was given jointly with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra; John Rutter was the guest conductor for the 1988 and 1990 Christmas concerts.
The Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir has made three recordings, including Christmas with Rutter; Berlioz's Requiem with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir; and a CBC recording of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
