The Toronto Public Space Committee (TPSC) is a local, volunteer-run, non-profit organization located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that prides itself in defending the city’s public space from corporate and private forces, including automobiles and outdoor advertising. The TPSC argues that public property, such as sidewalks, bike paths, parks and squares should be the independent and cultural “counterbalance” to the profit-driven private sector that plagues the city streets. Campaigns
The TPSC is consistently involved in local Toronto City Council affairs affecting city space. In recent years, the committee has formed various campaigns that aim to educate and lobby citizens, bureaucrats and politicians on matters, such as anti-postering bylaws, private city tree protection, mobile (or truck) advertising, TTC subway video ads and billboard variances. Many campaigns, such as the postering and city tree bylaws, have been successful in its goals due in large part to the group’s strong organizing and grassroots allies. Other campaigns the TPSC spearheads are less political, but stay true to public space advocacy. One such campaign is the Downtown De-Fence Project that tears down chain-link fences in residential neighbourhoods, removing the barriers between neighbours. The committee also hosts guerrilla gardening outings in the spring and summer; growing native plants and flowers in small crevices and decrepit planters in downtown streets. In 2005, the TPSC's Downtown De-Fence Project won a Clean and Beautiful City Appreciation Award. Neighbourhood is also a term in topology. ...

Spacing Magazine
Spacing Magazine Spacing, a seasonal magazine focusing on issues affecting Toronto's public realm, was the TPSC in house briefly until it was spun-off as a wholly independent magazine after the first issue. The two organizations often co-host events together and otherwise support each other. Past Spacing issues have focused on the surveillance of public space, street postering, working and playing in the city, and more. Launched in December 2003, the magazine has since been critically acclaimed by NOW Magazine, the National Post and Utne magazine, the latter of which awarded Spacing the best new title at its annual independent magazine awards. All articles and photographs are written and captured by volunteers. Two noteworthy Toronto photographers, Matt O'Sullivan and Sam Javanrouh, are known for their captivating street scene photos that are featured in all Spacing issues.
