Torquil Campbell is the lead singer and songwriter for the Montreal-based indie rock band Stars. In addition to singing, he also plays the trumpet and is a member of the band Memphis. He has also worked as an actor all his life, appearing on stage on and off broadway and throughout North America, playing roles as diverse as Gary, the teenage prostitute in the original New York production of the controversial play "Shopping and Fucking" starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the Title role in Shakespeare's Henry The Fifth. He has directed theatre, including a production of Romeo And Juliet for The Hamptons Shakespeare Festival. Campbell has also had numerous acting roles in Canadian television series and guest appearances in Sex and the City and Law & Order. A shaken Campbell calls me from the band's retreat/studio in the countryside outside Montreal, where the group is working on their forthcoming sophomore disc.
Fabulously named vocalist Torquil Campbell is a Smiths-obsessed actor who does Shakespeare for fun and has appeared on Sex And The City, Law & Order and as the voice of the cartoon character Bill Badger.
Campbell and Seligman have been pals since they were eight, and began putting together the blueprint of what Stars would eventually sound like when they were living in Brooklyn in the late 90s.
