Encyclopedia > Totenkopf Division

The SS Totenkopf Division--German for "Skull", literally "Dead's Head"--was a part of the German armed forces' famous Waffen SS. Originally formed from members of concentration camp guards, it eventually evolved into one of Nazi Germany's most formidable combat formations.

The Totenkopf Panzergrenadier Regiment was to form the centre of the defence, with the reconnaissance battalion screening its left flank and the Theodor Eicke Panzergrenadier Regiment digging in on the right.
The Wiking, Das Reich and Totenkopf Divisions were now operating under the command of the Eighth Army (formerly Army Detachment Kempf) during the withdrawal back to the Dnieper at Kremenchug.
