Name Origin

The name Totodile comes from the words tot (a word for a small child) and crocodile. For the Japanese Waninoko, "wani" (ワニ) means alligator and "ko" is a suffix that means "child". Characteristics

Appearance

Totodile's appearance is based on amphibious reptiles such as the crocodile or the alligator. It has a short blue body broken by a yellow band on its chest. On its back and tail are four red spikes. Totodile has a big and prominent jaw, filled with many sharp teeth. The word amphibious or amphibian, when used alone, has several possible meanings in the English language. ... Biology

Despite its small size and unevolved status, Totodile is not a Pokémon to be trifled with. It has a rough and tough attitude and is very rowdy; it may - and probably will - bite and chomp down anything that moves, perhaps even its own trainer.

Getting bitten by a Totodile is no laughing matter. A Totodile's well developed jaws are very powerful and capable of crushing many substances. Totodile itself, however, does not realise its strength. It may be causing serious injury while it thinks it is playfully nibbling. Therefore, constant supervision is required on the part of Totodile's trainer.

In the video games

In Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, Totodile is one of three starter Pokémon offered by Professor Elm near the start of the game, the other two being Chikorita and Cyndaquil. Selecting Totodile is equivalent to choosing a "medium" difficulty setting for the game, since the first two Gym Leaders have Pokémon which are neither strong nor weak against it. Pokemon Crystal Pokemon of the Day: Totodile (#158) - IGN FAQs (1343 words)
Hopefully this article won't be too much of a rehash, though, as Totodile doesn't have quite the same move options as Feraligatr and his stats are of course far inferior to his evolved counterpart's (necessitating a different strategy in battle, naturally).
Totodile doesn't really have much to choose from in the way of status-altering moves, but I've thrown in the two from its limited pool which I feel to be the most useful for whoever enters the ring behind Totodile.
You might even consider Dig while waiting for Totodile to evolve (and become capable of learning Earthquake)...I don't care for Dig as it is a telegraphed attack that is easily countered in addition to being relatively weak...but you might want to have SOME move to fend off those dreaded Electric types.
