Tower Gateway still functions as a terminus for the less busy DLR service to Beckton but access to other branches of the DLR requires a change. It provides good access to the Tower of London area, and is easily accessed from Tower Hill tube station and Fenchurch Street railway station by overground footpaths. In keeping with the Docklands Light Railway's original lightweight and basic philosophy, Tower Gateway is a simple elevated two track terminus with a narrow central platform. It immediately adjoins the access tracks to Fenchurch Street railway station. Access to the street is via escalator, stairs and elevator at the western end of the station, with a secondary staircase entrance at the eastern end.


The junction between the original line and the ramp connecting to the later tunnelled extension to Bank is just to the east of the station, and can be clearly seen from the east end of the station platform.
