In linear algebra, the trace of an n-by-n square matrix A is defined to be the sum of the elements on the main diagonal (the diagonal from the upper left to the lower right) of A, i.e.
A matrix whose trace is zero is said to be traceless or tracefree.
The concept of trace of a matrix is generalised to the trace class of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces.

TRACE, or the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer is a NASA space telescope designed to provide high resolution images and observation of the solar photosphere and transition region to the corona.
The satellite, launched in April 1998, has a 30 cm aperture and 1024 x 1024 CCD detector giving an 8.5 arc minute field of view.
TRACE is a SMEX or Small Explorer mission.
