Encyclopedia > Tracked vehicle

A Tracked vehicle is a vehicle that runs on its own tracks rather than on wheels. Examples include:

They are sometimes called track-laying vehicles, or Caterpillars, after the manufacturer of one make of bulldozer.

The principal design advantages of tracked over wheeled vehicles are that they are in contact with a larger surface area than would generally be the case with a wheeled vehicle, and as a result exert a much lower force per unit area on the ground being traversed than a conventional wheeled vehicle of the same weight. This makes them suitable for use on soft and uneven ground. The principal disadvantage is that tracks are a more complex mechanism than a wheel, and relatively prone to failure modes such as snapped or derailed tracks.

The first tracked vehicle was probably invented in the Middle Ages - though the issue of mechanical stress kept the vehicles from being useful until the 18th Century.
Tracked vehicles are mechanical, just as any other wheel-supported vehicle is, the main difference being that they keep the road to themselves.
The tracks are closed loops covering all or most of the wheels - which ride on the inside of the track, where the outside uses a relatively large surface to touch the ground.

The track system for a tracked vehicle as defined in claim 1 wherein the inner links engage the bushing with a press fit maintaining an elastic deformation pressure against the bushing, the bushing having a lower coefficient of expansion than the inner links, the inner links being composed of steel.
The track system for a tracked vehicle as defined in claim 1 wherein the bolt is composed of the material consisting of silicon nitride material with less than 15% of sintering additives or zirconium oxide.
The track system for a tracked vehicle as defined in claim 1 wherein the bushing has a surface engaged by the wheel with a radius of 3 mm and surfaces engaged by the inner links of with radii of 8 mm.
