Tracy Chevalier (born in Washington, DC in October of 1962) is a historical novelist whose career began with the book The Virgin Blue but who became well known with a book on the creation of the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer. Chevalier was raised in Washington, D.C. After receiving her BA in English from Oberlin College, she moved to England in 1984 where she worked several years as a reference book editor. Leaving her job in 1993, she began a year long MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia. Her tutors on the course were novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain.
