This is a list of traditional abbreviations for U.S. states, which were in wide use prior to the U.S. postal abbreviations. Some writers continue to prefer these abbreviations in contexts other than postal addresses. Some of these abbreviations are considerably more common than others.

The separate state governments and the United States federal government share sovereignty, in that an "American" is a citizen both of the federal entity and of his or her state of residence.
States are free to organize their state governments any way they like, as long as they conform to the rather minimal requirements in the U.S. Constitution.
