postcard from Germany: bikes and trains (987 words) |
But to give them their due, the transport mentality in Germany (I refer of course to a general state of mind in relation to matters of travel) is of a different cast to that in Ireland and deserves to have its highlights highlighted.
Having been in Germany for some time now, it makes me blush to think how casually Irish people jump into their cars to pick up a litre of milk from the local shop or to ferry able-bodied young villains to and from the local school twice everyday.
The attitude in Germany when it comes to short distances is to "get on your bike, Florian." And with bikes to be had for IR£15-£50 (19-63.50) in every university town in the country, it is a rare occasion that you meet someone who doesnt possess AND actually use one.
Trains (3108 words)
We have taken such a train anyway on a couple occasions because we had a ticket on another train but either took the earlier one or because of a missed connection.
Sometimes, these trains will connect with busses to villages off the track so it may be possible to buy a “train” ticket to a village several miles from the closes railroad.
The trains are so crowded sometimes that the conductors can't navigate their way through the train to check tickets.
