In 1958, at the urging of Governor Marvin Griffin, the Georgia legislature approved a measure to purchase Stone Mountain for $1,125,000.
The park is owned by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, a Georgia state authority, but the Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation currently has the contract to operate the park and its attractions.
