The treaty was signed by Prince Ivane Mukhranbatoni and Prince Garsevan Chavchavadze (Georgia) and General Potemkin (Russia) in the Castle of Georgievsk (North Caucasus) on July 24, 1783. Erekle II of Kartl-Kakheti and Catherine II of Russia ratified it in 1784. Russia, as an official protector of the Kingdom of Kartl-Kakheti, guaranteed its independence and territorial integrity and promised to help Georgians in the case of foreign aggression. Erekle II was to support Russia in all wars and not to establish diplomatic ties with other countries without the consent of Russian government.


Many Georgian politicians considered the alliance with Russia the only way to repel Persian and Ottoman aggression and to establish a link to Europe. However, Russia did nothing to help the Georgians during a disastrous Persian invasion in 1795. In 1800-1801, Russia abolished and annexed the extremely weakened Kingdom of Kartl-Kakheti, violating and virtually denouncing the Treaty of Georgievsk.
