In South African history, the Great Trek was an eastward and north-eastward migration of the Boers, descendants primarily of immigrants from western mainland Europe. It began in 1835 as an attempt to escape the recently imposed British rule, its Anglicisation policies and the constant border wars.
The British had abolished slavery in 1833 and recognised equality of rights under the law of persons of African and European descent, though most Voortrekkers (the pioneers of the Great Trek) did not own slaves as they were mainly of Trekboer (migrating farmer) descent and engaged in a semi-nomadic, pastoral life on the eastern Cape frontier. The Boers moved Northeast and settled into the two regions of Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The Orange Free State was closer to the Cape, and was also more populated and wealthy than Transvaal.
The wordtrek has entered the English language as one of few words derived from Afrikaans. It means a long, hard journey, and is derived from the Middle Dutchtrecken (meaning to pull or haul). Trekking sometimes refers to the activity of hiking, especially in a mountainous region.

There have been five live-action Star Trek series and an animated series, altogether comprising (as of May 2005) a total of 726 individual aired episodes (not including the original unaired pilot) and thirty seasons’ worth of television.
Star Trek: Phase II was set to air in 1978 as the flagship series of a proposed Paramount television network, and 12 episode scripts were written before production was due to begin.
In an ironic twist to the fan-based efforts to bring back Trek in the 1960s and 1970s, there are groups of fans who feel that the concept has run its course and who are actively seeking the end of Star Trek.
Specifications for Trek bikes from 1998 to 2003 (and assumedly to be updated periodically) are available from the Inside Trek/Owners Manual page of the Trek web site.
A note about components - Trek occasionally changed the components from what were described in the brochures; improved parts became available during the year or specified parts became unavailable.
The 1980 Trek Owner's Manual was loaned by Tim Fricker, while the PDF of the 1985 Owner's Manual was provided by Brad Ziegler.
