Trieu Viet Vuong (548-570) Realizing the strength of the Chinese army, Trieu Quang Phuc retreated back to a more favorable terrain where he could employ guerilla warfare and a war of attrition against the enemy. Trieu Quang Phuc was the first general to understand and use extensively the guerilla and attrition warfare method to decimate and demoralize slowly the enemy. For the territory, Trieu Quang Phuc withdraw to an undeveloped region, full of swamps, muddy area called dam Da Trach. In this area he established small camps and at nightfall would go surprise the enemy, and steal their supplies and arms as well. Trieu Quang Phuc did not proclaim himself emperor Trieu Viet Vuong until Ly Nam De died of illness which occurred in 548. As strong as the Chinese were, they could not win against this type of warfare devised by Trieu Quang Phuc. This undecisive period lasted until 557 when finally a respite came for the Van Xuan country. General Chen Pa H'sien's (Tran Ba Tien) skills and troops were needed elsewhere in China to quell a revolt. As soon as this relief news came another bad event happened though. Shortly after Ly Thien Bao passed away, another Ly family member, this time Ly Phat Tu who is Ly Bi and Ly Thien Bao's cousin, made claim to the emperor's throne. Ly Phat Tu challenged Trieu Quang Phuc. Both sides vied against each other for the throne with no decisive victory. Wary about internal fighting that would only frustrate the people, Trieu Viet Vuong negotiated a truce and peace. From Long Bien to the North would be Ly Phat Tu's new territory and from Long Bien to the south would be Trieu Viet Vuong's land.
