In phonetics, a triphthong (Greek τρίφθογγος, "triphthongos", literally "with three sounds," or "with three tones") is a monosyllabic vowel combination usually involving a quick but smooth movement from one vowel to another that passes over a third one. While "pure" vowels, or monophthongs, are said to have one target tongue position, triphthongs have a moving tongue. Phonetics (from the Greek word φωνή, phone meaning sound, voice) is the study of the sounds of human speech. ... In phonology, diphthongs and triphthongs are distinguished from sequences of monophthongs by whether or not the vowel sound may be analyzed into different phonemes or not.
A triphthong, like a diphthong, is a vowel sound that changes height and frontness as it is pronounced; unlike a diphthong, this change is not just in one direction, and therefore can only be accurately specified by naming three positions, not just where it starts and ends.
