The trot is a gait of the horse where the diagonal pairs of legs move forwards at the same time.
The speed of the trot is approx 8-12km/hr.
The trot can be classified as "working", "collected", "medium", or "extended", depending on the amount of engagement and collection of the horse.
By the rhythm, one may distinguish the square trot, when each diagonal pair of hoofs hits the ground at the same moment, thus producing a two-beat rhythm, and the fox trot, or the broken trot.
The Albany Pony Trot Club was established in 1997, and continues to gain in popularity with both the young drivers and the crowds that attend the Albany trots.
The Albany trotting season consists of ten meetings held from December to late March/early April each year, although the Albany ponies do often participate also in races at Williams, Wagin, Narrogin and Perth.
Each year the Pony Trots hold feature races to coincide with the regular trot programme, such as the Great Southern Country Derby, Cup races, and the Derby Final held at Gloucester Park.
