It is a white mutation of the red Trousseau grape. In California it was widely used as a varietal wine, under the Gray Riesling name. In the cool coastal area it is medium to low producing vine & can make very interesting wines. Bastardo is a type of red grape used in Portuguese port wine. ... When grown in the cool regions this grape is very aromatic & has been used for a wide range of both varietal wines & blends. In dry & off- dry wines it has been sought after to boost the aromatics of wines like Chardonnay, Vioginer, & even White Zinfandel! It has also been used in desert wines, Champaign (& Method Champainois) and Port wines.
