This line was planned to serve the new town of Tseung Kwan O ("Junk Bay"), and after being approved by the Hong Kong Executive Council on 20 October1998, construction commenced on 24 April1999. The line opened on 18 August2002, and took over the train tracks running through the Eastern Cross Harbour Tunnel from the Kwun Tong Line. Subsequently, the Kwun Tong Line was diverted to Tiu Keng Leng station on the new line.
This line is the first MTR line with no track on viaducts, and thus the depot is at surface level. Po Lam station is also at surface level, but is completely covered.
Not all of the line was constructed recently. Quarry Bay station and the tunnels crossing Victoria Harbour had been in use for over 10 years by the Kwun Tong Line.
Originally, the MTR bought a batch of new trains to serve the new line, known as "K-Stock." However, the depot facilities were not built for the new trains, so the original "M-stock" trains run on the new line while the new trains are transferred to the Kwun Tong Line for service.
Note that the TseungKwanO South station is not in service yet, and interchange stations are not denoted.
The TseungKwanOLine (將軍澳綫) is one of the seven lines of the MTR system in Hong Kong.
This line was planned to serve the new town of TseungKwanO ("literally, General's Bay"), and after being approved by the Hong Kong Executive Council on 20 October 1998, construction commenced on 24 April 1999.
TseungKwanO (Chinese: 將軍澳, Jyutping: zoeng1 gwan1 ou3; Cantonese IPA: ; formerly Junk Bay) is a new town in Hong Kong.
TseungKwanO is located in the Sai Kung district on the eastern part of the New Territories, but sometimes it is regarded as part of Kowloon due to its close proximity to the city.
The exact origin of the name TseungKwanO is unknown, but it is said to be named in honor of the General of the Ming Dynasty, who visited TseungKwanO at some point.
