Tuolumne City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Tuolumne County, California. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 1,865.

Geography

Tuolumne City is located at 37°57'42" North, 120°14'13" West (37.961785, -120.236851)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,865 people, 736 households, and 474 families residing in the community. The population density is 309.0/km² (801.4/mi²). There are 797 housing units at an average density of 132.1/km² (342.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 89.01% White, 0.38% African American, 4.29% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.54% Pacific Islander, 1.82% from other races, and 3.75% from two or more races. 6.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 736 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 15.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the community the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $32,361, and the median income for a family is $41,007. Males have a median income of $35,524 versus $22,593 for females. The per capita income for the community is $16,567. 14.2% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
