The word comes from the language of the Turuwal people of the George's River near Port Jackson.
The Turuwal are a sub-group of the Dharug language group, and many of the Aboriginal words we use in English are from this language (waratah, wallaby, dingo, kookaburra, koala and woomera).
If you trace the word "boomerang" to its aboriginal origins, it clearly describes a returning throwing stick, and there are clear words for other kinds of throwing stick.
