Tylertown is a town located in Walthall County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,910. It is the county seat of Walthall County6.


Geography

Tylertown is located at 31°6'58" North, 90°8'34" West (31.116209, -90.142817)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.9 km˛ (3.1 mi˛). 7.9 km˛ (3.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.33% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,910 people, 707 households, and 461 families residing in the town. The population density is 241.8/km˛ (625.9/mi˛). There are 825 housing units at an average density of 104.4/km˛ (270.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 56.34% White, 41.41% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 707 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% are married couples living together, 21.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 75.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $20,515, and the median income for a family is $30,125. Males have a median income of $30,625 versus $16,094 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,712. 32.3% of the population and 28.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 48.0% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
