It used the 7.7mm Arisaka cartridge that was also used in the Type 92 medium machine gun. The type 97 was mechanically a copy of the Czech ZB vz/26, though it had a different stock and pistol grip. It used a vertical 30 round box magazine. The light barrel was also easy to overheat, which meant the gunner had to fire in bursts, or the barrel would be shot out.
