Son of Harold Littledale Power, an actor, wine merchant, and mine agent, and Eliza "Ethel" Lavenu, an actress. Early in his career, he was billed as Tyrone Power the Younger, referring to his grandfather, the Irish actor Tyrone Power. At the age of 14 he was sent from England to California to learn citrus planting. He quickly tired of this and found acting work, making his Broadway debut in 1886. After an extremely prosperous 30 years of acting on the stage and touring around the world, Power moved into Silent Film in 1914. Initially playing the leading man in movies, he soon switched to playing villains and proved highly successful. In 1930, Power had a final great role as the villainous wagon driver Red Flack in Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail, which provided an unknown John Wayne with his first starring role. Power died of a massive heart attack in the arms of his 17-year-old son at the end of the next year. He was 62. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1914, the only son of English-born Frederick Tyrone Edmond Power and Helen Emma "Patia" Reaume, who were both actors.
Power was descended from a long theatrical line going back to his great-grandfather, the celebrated Irish actor Tyrone Power.
Tyrone Power died from a heart attack in Madrid, Spain, while filming Solomon and Sheba in 1958, aged 44 (and was replaced in that movie by Yul Brynner).
