The United Nations Emergency Force was created in November 1956 to settle the hostilities between Israel and Egypt and to supervise the withdrawal of French, British, and Israeli armed forces from Egypt. The UNEF also served to keep the peace between Israeli and Egyptian armed forces after the withdrawal. The troops were deployed along the border between Israel and Egypt -- Gaza, and Sharm el-Sheikh. The peacekeeping mission was ended in June 1967 by request from Egypt.
Canadian Foreign Minister Lester Pearson came up with the idea initially to oversee the withdrawal from Egypt.
The following countries provided troops to this Mission: Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, India, Norway, Sweden and Yugoslavia.
