The United States Naval Institute is a non-profit, professional organization in the United States.


Established in 1873, the Institute describes its mission as "to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas, to disseminate and advance the knowledge of sea power, and to preserve our naval and maritime heritage."


The institute has no official ties to the United States Navy and receives no funds. However, the majority of authors of its professional magazine, Proceedings, are officers and sailors of the Navy.
