 U.S. Route 1 in Maryland enters the state from the Pennsylvania state line into northern Cecil County and generally follows a diagonal path mostly near Interstate 95's path through Maryland during its trip through the state. Because of this, US 1 has lost much of its significance as a major route through the state, after having been not only bypassed by Interstate 95, but also by U.S. Route 301 earlier. However, it still remains a main route for the individual towns it traverses, such as (from north to south) Fallston, Elkridge, Jessup, Savage, Laurel, Beltsville, College Park, Hyattsville, and Mount Rainier.
