In 1945, the east end of the route was extended through Joplin, Missouri, where it paralleled U.S. Highway 66 to Springfield, Missouri. But when the last section of Interstate 44 was completed between Joplin and Springfield in 1966, the east end of US 166 was truncated from Springfield back to the I-44 intersection west of Joplin.
