United States Highway 22, an east-west route, is one of the original United States highways of 1926. It originally ran from Cambridge, Ohio in the west to Elizabeth, New Jersey in the east; today, it runs from Cincinnati, Ohio to Newark, New Jersey near the Newark Liberty International Airport. Route 22 runs through central New Jersey, where it has a high speed limit (55 mi/h, 89 km/h for most of its run), much traffic, many traffic lights, and stores lining its entire length. Indeed there are even stores located in the median between the two directions of the road. Therefore, it is necessary to accelerate to the speed traffic is travelling (usually over 65 mi/h, 105 km/h), within the space of a few white-knuckle seconds. Similarly, driving along Route 22 is a game of avoiding the drivers pulling out onto the highway. It is known as one of the hardest and most dangerous roadways to drive on throughout New Jersey.

In Western Pennsylvania the highway serves as a major corridor between Pittsburgh and Johnstown, as the highway approaches downtown Pittsburgh it is multiplexed with Interstate 376 and then west of downtown Pittsburgh multiplexed with Interstate 279. U.S. 22 continues west past the Pittsburgh International Airport and is limited-access (expressway) all the way from Downtown Pittsburgh to the West Virginia and Ohio (Ohio River Crossing) lines. It serves as a major commuter freeway for many in the western suburbs of Pittsburgh including those in Wierton, West Virginia and Steubenville, Ohio.
